Hooping indoors in the winter poses many challenges for us. When we can’t meet at the YMCA, Kayla hoops in her living room surrounded by furniture, tables, electronics, plants…the list goes on and on. Lots of breakables indeed. I hoop in my spare bedroom which has essentially become my hoop room. It’s not very big but I cleared most of the furniture out so there isn’t too much danger other than the light on the ceiling. (So far, so good.) However, as you see in the video I have an angled ceiling which prevents me from practicing most vertical moves and above-the-head hooping.
There are some advantages to hooping in confined spaces though. It really forces you to hoop around your shoulders more, which isn’t the most natural thing to learn. It takes lots and lots of practice to do effortlessly. And I think it’s safe to say we’ve both improved this winter.

Many of you may know Juliette Lewis as an actress, but probably aren’t aware she has a fabulous set of pipes and can really rock her heart out too. The song in this edition of our hoop dance practice video is from her former band Juliette and the Licks. It turned out to be a perfect hooping song and I challenge somebody to use it for a fire hooping video. I’d love to see how great they go together!
DANGER: What kind of damage have you done with your hoop?
