When I found out Brecken Rivara was hosting a hoop dancing workshop in Minneapolis, I knew I had to be there. Her hoop dance technique is completely awe-inspiring and incomparable to the conventional hooping we are all used to seeing and doing. After spending 8+ hours soaking up and practicing everything she had to share, I am pretty exausted, but can’t wait to get back out and practice everything I’ve learned. Her insight into hoop dance ignites a whole new world of thinking and will no doubt continue sinking in over time.
Everything she taught was new to me and so many times in both sessions things would just click in my head. Nothing feels better than when you get down a new move, and this weekend was filled with getting down new moves. Even after two solid years of hooping I was baffled at the simplicity of some tiny little things I’ve been missing this whole time. I recommend anybody who loves hooping to take classes from Brecken if they ever get the opportunity.
The weekend was especially spectacular thanks to my new fellow hoopers. They traveled from all over the Midwest and central Minnesota to soak up some precious wisdom. Everybody there was so awesome and nice, it was a lot of fun to meet them all and jam and jelly out together. Hopefully we can all reunite at Central Hoop Arts this August.
Here are a few snapshots of the fun.
No surprise Brecken is a blur!
We missed the opportunity to get a group photo of everybody together, but we did the best we could at the last minute.
Lastly, for those of you who are unfamiliar with Brecken, check this shit out…
